Registered Social Worker

Athe Jeyakumaran [MSW, BSW, B.A.] brings a wealth of experience and a deeply empathetic approach to his work with young people and their families as a social worker. With nearly a decade of experience, Athe is dedicated to building warm, genuine, and authentic relationships with his clients, driven by a belief that everyone’s unique story is worth exploring and can lead to a meaningful life transformation.

Athe creatively integrates a variety of therapeutic techniques, including narrative, empowerment, strengths-based, trauma-informed, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) approaches. He tailors these approaches to create personalized and accessible treatment plans for each client, recognizing the uniqueness of each person’s journey.

Athe’s personal experience navigating the world with ADHD adds a layer of insight and empathy to his practice. He openly shares his story of embracing neurodivergence as a superpower, empowering others to do the same. This inclusivity and understanding are evident in his work, where he strives to create safe and supportive spaces where young people and their families feel empowered, understood, and cared for.

Prior to joining NowWhat Support Services, Athe served as a school social worker in the Toronto District School Board, providing support to students impacted by a wide range of concerns including racism, discrimination, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, life transitions, and bullying. In addition, he led Toronto’s largest informal diversion program, supporting families and youth involved with the justice system. His experience as a case manager and harm reduction counselor has further solidified his commitment to an intersectional, collaborative, anti-oppressive, social justice, and harm reduction lens.

At NowWhat, Athe works with youth, teens, and young adults in both 1:1 and group sessions, blending clinical counseling with practical executive function and ADHD strategies, supporting individuals and their families in cultivating the lives they envision, fostering critical hope, compassion, and self-love, utilizing art, sports, music, and movement as a therapeutic medium.

Outside of work, Athe loves to watch the Raptors, shoot hoops, spend time outdoors, cook, make music, and watch anime, embracing life with a vibrant spirit and a passion for connecting with others.
