ABBY TIGCHELAAR
(She/Her)
Child Life Specialist
Abby Tigchelaar [MSc., CCLS, OAMHP] is trained to provide therapeutic intervention and developmentally appropriate support for children under the age of 18. Abby’s professional experiences have been both in hospital and private practice and have included supporting children and youth in the areas of: foster care and adoption; illness and injury; grief and bereavement; eating disorders and other mental health challenges. Abby can provide both preventative/preparative interventions as well as supportive/reparative interventions for optimal coping. Abby provides an individualized approach based on detailed assessments using a combination of bibliotherapy, play and art-based therapeutic interventions, developmentally appropriate narrative interventions, as well as DBT and CBT-informed support. These approaches assist in the learning of emotion-regulation skills, allow for emotional expression and support for understanding experiences, and providing children and youth with a sense of mastery and control throughout their lived experiences.
Outside of work, you will usually find Abby with a coffee in her hand and a dog at her side!
